JUNCTION JUBILEE+NEW CRAWL FORMAT

This summer we have moved the crawl to coincide with the Junction Summer Solstice Festival. The Design Crawl will start at 5pm and end promptly at 8pm. Which is a departure from our normal late night Narwhal backyard bonfires, we know. Don't worry we haven't gone soft! We're upping our game with a great big art installation hosted by the Junction Flea called the Junction Jubilee, and you're involved!

Here's how it works: Before you leave your house, pack yourselves a little night time picnic with snacks and a cozy blanket. Come to the Junction and enjoy the crawl, including Smash and Full Stop who will be hosting events for making flags, hats+ decorations, and bike, stroller+wagon decorating respectively. We're gonna get festive!

At 8pm, everyone will come to Smash and once we are all convened we are going to PARADE down to Vine Park, where we roll out our blankets and enjoy the longest day of the year.

This is definitely a MORE is more event, so bring your kazoos, mascot costumes, drums, bikes, wagons, strollers, candles, flashlights, yummy snacks, sneaky beverages, friends and family.

THE BEAU & BAUBLE + BROTHERS DRESSLER

Brothers Dressler have agreed to channel the whimsy of The Beau & Bauble's atmosphere in their project for this year's Design Crawl.  We'll see a hybrid of an everyday furniture item with growing, organic offshoots.  It's not a far cry for them, incorporating as they do new life and ideas into pre-existing shapes and material sources.

About the Brothers in their own words:

We are material-based designers striving to maximize the natural features and strengths of responsibly sourced material to design and build bespoke furnishings, lighting, objects and special projects. With a focus on sustainability, and an eye to material, process, and craftsmanship, we create custom works and limited edition pieces from our downtown Toronto workshop/studio.

BROTHERS DRESSLER studio:

The Beau & Bauble will be open for late night shopping!  Grab a new frock, piece of  jewellery, card, or trinket for you or the special gal in your life.

NARWHAL

THE FUNERAL [THEIR COLLECTION]

MELISSA FISHER & CHRIS BONI

Narwhal is pleased to present a special installation and exhibition where parallel worlds exist in tandem. Acting as an on-location film shoot for Two Cares Due None, an independent feature film created in Iceland, Italy, and Canada by Melissa Fisher and Chris Boni, The Funeral is both here and there, existing on parallel planes within the same dimension.

From artists and filmmakers Melissa Fisher and Chris Boni:

Ecstatic enjoyment has been given to us from the vantage of an outsider. Through an installation of photography, altered found objects, sculptural installations, and framed frottage rubbings we hope to convey the unique characteristics of The Caretaker, one of the most significant burgeoning artists today who works in "a hybrid re-localized manner". This is not an embellishment, rather a spawn of defense to the subject of location – allowing for space and distance-given to trade upon our newfound axis of co-creation.

The Funeral is on view August 23rd to 29th.  For more information please visit www.narwhalprojects.com

SMASH

Come visit the camp site of Troop 171. Imagine yourself getting warm by the campfire in a plush art deco chair surrounded by Persian rugs. Roast some marshmallows by the fire. Camp under the lights of the design crawl with us Friday night. It'll be intense!

Night Flea!

The Junction Flea will be hosting a FREE Night Flea from 6-11PM, featuring craft and vintage dealers as well as food, drinks, BEER and in case you get lost, a Design Crawl info booth.

Pandemonium: installation by White Sphinx

At left, a normal-sized judy, At right, a normal sized doorway. In the middle, a giant cassette in progress.

Pandemonium Books & Discs presents a tribute to the cassette tape.

Design collective White Sphinx will install a giant cassette tape in Pandemonium in memory of all the mixtapes eaten by cassette machines over the years. Are you old enough to remember when, instead of illegally downloading MP3s, you had to tape things from the radio? That took took careful timing and a fast finger on the record button.

Many people think that vinyl records sound better than CDs and MP3s. Nobody thinks cassette tapes sound better. Record sleeves were big and had space for fantastic artwork. Cassettes? Well, no. They're even smaller than CD cases and the rectangular format often meant that the album cover would end up being a tiny square with a track listing underneath. And you always knew that eventually your tape would jam. Or stretch. Or be chewed up by your tape player. But for some of us, cassettes and the music we put onto them evoke a certain period in our lives and remain a potent symbol of those times.

Pandemonium Books and Discs is at 2920 Dundas St West. Exclaim magazine just named it one of Toronto's "must visit" record stores!

White Sphinx are a design collective consisting of Finn O'Donnell and Carol Gleason-Rechner (because it's cooler to be a design collective than just using your names). You probably know us from Finn's super cool tshirts, available only at Pandemonium. Clanky, Carol's car, still plays cassettes (but only on road trips).

Mjölk + MSDS

This year Mjölk is partnering up with local design studio MSDS. They are constructing a booth to be placed inside our shop, where we will be selling tasty treats until 11pm, or until it all runs out!

See you Friday!

The Burning Man Festival happens once a year in the middle of the Nevada desert. It's weird and whacky and full of mindblowing art. Photographs taken over three festivals on display Friday night.

Sightings : East of Keele

Dedicated to the love of city wandering and fantastical discoveries, East of Keele brings to the street the video animation Sightings by Stacia Verigin.

Sightings (video animation, 2005-2007) exists primarily as a kind of lost work, in that it exists to be found by chance more than anything else. Composed entirely of my own arms shadowy movements, the separate motions are then edited into imaginary, puppet-like creatures, that appear briefly, in the form of a video projection. Now seemingly unattached from the rest of me, they are free to swim, fly, or run and be witnessed by those who happen to be there, in the right place at the right time.

Mason Studio at ARTiculations: Rise of the Mid

Mason Studio creates a mysterious underworld for the Junction Design Crawl. In the shop windows and gallery at ARTiculations, a sculptural installation explores how simple modifications of spatial forms and volumes can significantly impact our perceptions of space. An imaginary realm demonstrates the impact of the built environment on our personal emotional state.

Lori Harrison Design

[ReFrame]

For the third annual Junction Design Crawl, designer Lori Harrison will create an art intervention entitled "ReFrame" that guides viewers on a journey to "find beauty in unexpected places". A series of framed locations will reveal what is often overlooked in our manufactured environment — a rich tapestry of colour, texture and pattern.

The intervention begins at the Community Living Toronto office at 2934 Dundas Street West. There, viewers will find a map to guide them through the Junction streetscape, discovering ReFramed interventions on area facades. Each of the 5 locations will have an audio component accessible by mobile phone.
